Nslookup
This tool looks at the entries in the name server, created from the DNS entries and refreshed every 72 hours (at the most). Helps trace DNS resolution
Ping
First of the troubleshooting utilities, ping was developed in 1983 and tests both availability and system connectivity.
Trace Route (traceroute, tracert)
Trace route uses ping with a zero TTL to retreive the ip/name of the route to another IP address. Useful in finding the problem node in a route
